Character Name: Selene
Pantheon: Greek
Parentage: Hyperion and Theia
Patronage: Moon
Residence: Selene tends to spend her off time in her NYC brownstone, Cabo San Lucas villa, or her relaxing Bahaman hideaway. Since her duties usually keep her busy during the night when everyone seems to be out having fun, Selene chose NYC because there always seems to be something going on even during the daytime. Currently she is thinking about selling her brownstone now that she’s bought and renovated a Chicago loft.

Personality: Growing up as a middle child, Selene often felt overlooked by her parents. It seemed to her that whenever she accomplished something, Helios and Eos always managed to steal her thunder. Instead of trying to compete with her siblings, Selene focused her energies inward. She would spend hours reading and drawing, though her family never saw any of her artwork.

Even though Selene felt unappreciated by her parents, she never blamed her siblings. In fact some of her happiest memories from childhood are from times spent with Helios and Eos. When making the decision to move out and be on her own, the only thing that held her back was the thought of moving away from her brother and sister. Eventually, she decided that she needed the independence that living away from her family would bring, though she knew that her siblings were only a call away if she needed them.

Once Selene moved away from home, her fun loving and rebellious nature came to the forefront. While she took her duty seriously, Selene managed to interject some fun into it as well. The phases of the moon was one of her first forays into rebelling as well as declaring the night of the new moon as her night off. If she thought that she could get away with it, she would do the phases out of order, just to see if anyone noticed.

Not all of her rebellions were for fun though. Selene sometimes cut off her hair or even dyed it mainly to see if anyone would notice. While she had gotten used to being overshadowed by her family, that didn’t mean that she didn’t crave their attention, or any attention. Some of her attention getting schemes were on the wild side, but she always reined herself in before she went too far and anyone got hurt.

While driving her chariot, Selene liked to look down and watch what the people on earth were doing. It sometimes angered her that people were having fun while she was working, but for the most part she was content with her duty. Of course her vantage point allowed her to learn many secrets, some of which she would share when gossiping with friends.

Selene is quite artistic, though her medium is not the sky like Eos and Helios. She prefers to do her paintings on canvas. Bright vibrant colors typify her work, probably because of the time she spends in her chariot rushing through the deep dark night sky. Her paintings decorate her homes, though if anyone asks, Selene just tells them that they are from an artist that she discovered.

Selene’s quiet and shy exterior belies a friendly and fun loving personality. She is very laid back, and never seems to get angry, though part of the reason for that is her dislike of confrontation. She will do anything for her friends and family. One of her biggest strengths is her ability to listen and observe. From her vantage point in the sky, she likes to watch the world, noticing even subtle changes.

Duty and loyalty are important to Selene. Even during her most rebellious stages, Selene never neglected her lunar responsibilities. She might have spiced things up for fun, but not doing her job never crossed her mind. She assumes everyone else shares the same work ethic and is disturbed to see evidence to the contrary.

She hates conflict of all kinds. Even something as simple as someone disagreeing with her will make Selene doubt her decisions, making her seem indecisive. The reality is that Selene just wants everyone to like her which depending on the situation can cause problems. It is the reason why she keeps her paintings a secret, afraid of possible ridicule and scorn.

When she feels overwhelmed, Selene will retreat to her secret hideaway in the Bahamas. She goes to her home there and shuts out the world, sometimes hiding there for weeks, only appearing in the sky at night, never contemplating shirking her responsibility. She knows that this is not the best way to deal with problems. Selene is just starting to learn to recognize when she is running away from troubles instead of facing them.

History: Selene is the middle child of Hyperion and Theia. Her older brother Helios is the sun god, while younger sister Eos is the dawn. As a child she suffered from middle child syndrome, often feeling ignored or overlooked while her siblings seemed to get all the attention. As an adult, Selene has outgrown her feelings of being overlooked, though she occasionally acts out, seeking attention.

Over the years Selene has had several affairs including ones with Zeus and Pan. The love of her life was the shepard Endymion. The young mortal was given immortality and youth in eternal slumber by Zeus. At first visiting her love in a cave on Mount Latmos was exciting, but as the years passed, it lost it’s luster. What good was it to have an immortal lover, if he was asleep and couldn’t hold or touch her? While Selene has moved on, Endymion still holds a part of her heart.

As a result of her numerous affairs Selene is a mother many times over. Her daughters are her pride and joy. The fifty Menai were fathered by Endymion, while Zeus fathered Pandea and Ersa. Remembering her childhood, Selene vowed to give each of her children individual attention when possible and not to judge one against the others’ accomplishments. She always makes time for her girls, and is there when they need her. Selene’s dislike for conflict sometimes makes her act more like her children’s friend than mother.

One of her greatest sorrows is the loss of her and Zeus’ son, the Nemean Lion at the hands of Herakles. While he was a beast rather than deity, he was still a part of her and his death shook Selene to the core. It was one of the first times she truly felt the pain of loss. That pain eased somewhat when Hera put the Nemean Lion into the sky as the constellation Leo, but a piece of her heart is still missing.

Selene has made a point in not getting involved in the conflicts of the mortal world. She may live among them and have them as lovers, but she has remained detached. She watches as their lives play out from her vantage point in the sky—almost like her own personal soap opera

Likewise she tries to avoid any of the petty affairs of the Gods. Probably as a holdover from childhood, she tries to avoid being caught in the middle of any conflict. When things on Olympus get heated, Selene disappears as soon as the moon has set. While her behavior hasn’t acquired her any enemies, it hasn’t gained her friends either.
